    Little Sprouts

Just under a month ago I planted my little seeds and they are growing so well. I’ve planted zucchini, tomato, cucumber, lettuce, bell peppers, peas and more. They’re quickly outgrowing their little seed pots so I’m hoping to run to Home Depot tonight when Blaine gets off work to load my car up with soil to fill the new raised beds Blaine built me while I was in Vegas. And to add to the old raised bed that I didn’t fill with the best soil for growing. I’m hoping it’s not too late, is that possible? I feel like that’s…

weekend fun // veggie garden prep & puppies

I’m a little late on starting my seeds and it’s mostly due to my paranoia about the random snow we always get in April. I’m convinced that’s why none of my plants have done that well in the past, because they get a bad start in life and I’m not nurturing enough to revive them. Now that April is almost over and the days are much nicer, I’ve started some seeds in the sunroom. Lots of tomato, zucchini, lettuce, cucumber, bell peppers and plenty of others I’m excited about. While I wait for my seeds to sprout I’m focusing on…

    chicken drama

I’m just one of those people that worries about everything. Right now my mind is on our little white hen. She’s always been picked on by our brown hen and rooster. We even had to keep her in a dog crate in the laundry room for over 4 months last year because the rooster was a little too fiesty with giving her lovin’ and she had lost most of the feathers on her back. If you know anything about chickens you know that if there is any sign of injury or weakness, there’s a good chance the other chickens will…

    garden dreaming

Whatever-is-happening-with-the-weather-right-now and I have a love hate relationship. The warmth in the middle of winter is totally welcome. But at the same time here I am dreaming of spring and gardens already when I know I can’t start for at least a couple of months. Since we (ahem, Blaine) finished our fence last year, we can now put our focus on landscaping. We always talked about working on the front yard first. All we want to do is add some grass and some plants since, you know, it’s in the front and everyone can see it. But I don’t know…

    around the garden

I use the term “garden” lightly. More like 99% weeds, dirt, rocks and concrete, 1% pretty sunflowers and tomato plant. So maybe this year wasn’t the year our backyard turned into a lush green oasis, but I’d say the fact that the sunflowers are huge and the tomato plant is growing insanely fast means we’ll get there eventually. Maybe my black thumb is slowly getting a green tinge to it. I’ve been loving coming out back after my work day is done while dinner is cooking or after we’ve finished eating. By then it’s cool enough and the sun isn’t…

One thing the iPhone sucks at (+ our first chicken egg!)

We came home from dinner and Blaine checked the nesting box, crossing his fingers that there’s an egg. He’s been doing this for the last few weeks now that the chickens are old enough and he says they’ve been making some interesting noises. He’s been hopeful, I’ve been “eh” about it since I think it’ll freak me out too much to eat their eggs as illogical as that is since I’ll eat eggs from the store. I was in the house when Blaine started frantically calling my name from the backyard. I assumed that one of the chickens was hurt…

Hot Chicks // They’re 2 months old now!

Sorry about the Hot Chicks title, I had to. I don’t think they’re even considered chicks anymore even they’re only about 2 months old, they got SO big so fast! They won’t start laying until around 4-6 months so we’ve still got a few months ahead of us before we get fresh eggs, but we love them already, eggs or not. Now that they’re outside they’re so easy to care for! I go out there once a day to top off their food and I refill their water about every other day now that I’ve put two different water bowls…

    Worst chicken parents ever.

Our chickens are officially just over three weeks old. They are super awkward looking because they’re growing their big kid feathers, but there is still some fluff in random places. Mostly their heads look tiny because it is still covered in fluffy feathers. Well along with getting older, they are starting to get more curious… and active. This includes jumping out of their enclosure which is located in the bathroom. It doesn’t happen often, but the little droppings on the floor are an indication of that. When we first got them I was a nervous nellie about the toilet and…

    Thoughts on a Monday

Temporarily named Cher until she grows her feathers and we come up with a real name. Posting has been scarce. Anything not related to Kintage has been super neglected lately. Luckily, I have a husband who doesn’t mind doing dishes and vacuuming the family room at 11pm when he has to work the next day. Stress to get the shop open has been overwhelming because I’m SO close, but keep having problems with the checkout process. It looks like it’ll be about a week before they’re completely resolved, so that’s extremely annoying since I was aiming to open last week.…
